Surrounding the magic square are the Eight Trigrams. Each of them contained yin and yang lines and the combination derives individual meanings of the bagua that we are familiar with, for example chien, li, dui etc. Next, the 12 Zodiac Animals surrounds the bagua and each one assigned with its own direction in the bagua. The 12 zodiacs are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. These animals are further combined with the 5 Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water to produce a 60 year cycle of time. This wheel of time is then guarded within the body of a tortoise known as “Rubal”. According to legends, Rubal was shot by an arrow of immortality by the Bodhisattva Manjusri.
