First and foremost, the mountain is a symbol of permanence and immovability and also the emblem of powerful support and protection from reversal of fortune. Regarded as the most powerful symbol on earth, mountains played the same sort of role in Chinese Cosmology as the Emperor did in society; they ensured cosmic order and permanence. This special ornament inscribed with a well known proverb “Tu Chan Ao Thou, Kui Xing Thi Dou” is associated to the God of Examination (Kui Xing). Literally, it translates to “stand lonely on the giant turtle’s head”, meaning coming in first in examinations for those sitting for important examinations. It also have special connotation for those in business or career where one will climb up to be first on top. The name ‘Kui Xing’ literally means “Chief Star”, and anciently referred to the ‘spoon’ of the Big Dipper (featured behind the mountain with a brush and a book storage). The Chun Qiu Yun Dou Shu defines the ‘Kui Xing’ as “the four stars in the first section of the dipper”. The ‘handle’ was referred to as the ladle/spoon. Kui Xing’s original name is the original name of the star in the Big Dipper located furthest from the ‘handle’ – Dubhe. Also featured in front of the mountain is the old tale of the “Carp Jumping and Crossing over the Dragon Gate”, reminding one of the ability to resist hurdles and achieving success.Portraying perseverance and determination, the carp is a tough fish that could resist big currents in China’s ancient Yellow River. The carp is able to persistently resist hardship, swim upstream and rapidly jump above the tides to reach the heaven, denoting great achievement in ones pursuit or high ambition. This stunning figurine constitutes a meaningful and prestigious gift to wish one success in imperial examinations, business, career or studies.

Kui Xing
In Daoist tradition, Kui Xing is said to have been “bent and hunchbacked, as if he were an actual calligraphy character”, and came to be viewed as a saint of human fortune, particularly with regard to imperial examinations. Late Ming Dynasty scholar Gu Yan-Wu, often referred to as Gu Ting-Lin, wrote of Kui Xing in his Record of Historical Knowledge: “The date of the beginning of modern people’s veneration of Kui Xing is unknown. Since Kui was taken to be the master of composition, therefore the people established shrines to venerate him. People depicted Kui Xing’s right foot standing on a giant turtle or fish and his left foot support a ladle, a writing brush in his hand, and his body full of vigor and life.
